| Warning: Your Internet Business Can Disappear Overnight...Take It From Me!
|
Hi, Brian here with a slightly different blog entry than the one I had planned for the other day. Here's the story:
Tried to log on to my site's admin the other day, but it seemed like the server was down. No theradicalebayletter.com. no blog, no cassingenacopy.com, nothing. And no response from the helpdesk. So I just had to sit and wait for the site to come back up. I'm on some server with the rest of the sites, so I had quickly reached the limit of what I could do.
The reason I got no response initially from the helpdesk is because as far as I could see, the server was down, but it wasn't actually down, the server was fine.
What has happened is that the owners of the server, or the datacenter of something deleted my hosting account. No warning, no reason, no cause, again, nothing.
Maybe I got a spam complaint. Maybe my site or hosting account got hijacked and used for spamming or hacking or something. I don't know, I'm still waiting to find out why all this happened. I can only imagine it was a spam complaint or something, but even then it seems heavy handed. (Especially since I only use double opt in forms)
But to all those members of theradicalebayletter.com: I'll have the site back up and running as soon as possible. If you made a commission which hasn't been paid yet, I have all those records at Paypal. And the new site is gonna be bigger and better, more value, new graphics, higher conversions.
There's also a few things I'm going to be implementing and I suggest you consider some of these:
- Full server backups once a week. (And download them) I actually did a backup of my server recently, but I never got around to downloading the file. So when everything was wiped, that included the backup file. Server backups are easy to do if you have cpanel, there's an icon on the main page.
- Exporting of database records once a week. Again, I did this but I got new members in the meantime that now won't be emailed about this.
- Better customer service. Obviously if someone reported me for spamming they weren't interested in the site anymore, so I'll make it easier to unsubscribe and more obvious how and where to do it. Emails from my main list have an unsubscribe link, but not emails directly from the site.
So make sure you explore these options and all the other ones I may have missed, because, like I said, your internet business can easily disappear without a trace in an instant. |
